WHAT: MPR News' "Bright Ideas" series welcomes Sarah Hicks, a versatile and vibrant conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra. Host Stephen Smith and Hicks will discuss composing, music, and attracting new audiences in Orchestra Hall.

Sarah Hicks is part of a new wave of young up and coming female conductors. Hicks is a composer and the Minnesota Orchestra's principal conductor of pop and presentations. Hicks is the first woman to hold a titled conductor post in the Minnesota Orchestra's history and she also heads the innovative classical series, "Inside the Classics." Born in Tokyo and raised in Honolulu, Hicks became a prizewinning pianist by her early teens. Hicks's talents have been recognized with numerous prizes and awards such as the Thomas Hoopes Prize for composition, the Doris Cohen Levy Prize for conducting, and she was the recipient of the Presser Award during her time at the Curtis Institute of Music.
