WQXR, Carnegie Hall and APM Present "CARNEGIE HALL LIVE," A Season-Long Celebration of Carnegie Hall's 120th Anniversary
Sep 13, 2011
National Radio Series Brings Performances from All Three Stages of New York's Premier Concert Hall to Audiences Across the Nation and Worldwide, On Air and Online
(New York and Minneapolis, September 13, 2011) -- WQXR, Carnegie Hall and American Public Media (APM) have partnered to present CARNEGIE HALL LIVE, a vibrant radio broadcast and digital series that will present twelve live performances by some of the world's foremost ensembles, soloists, and recitalists from the three stages of Carnegie Hall's 2011-2012 concert season. Originating from New York City, CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will stretch far beyond the Big Apple with live national radio broadcasts in markets across the country, and an extensive digital interactive presence that will reach audiences worldwide.
CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will launch on Tuesday, October 11 at 8pm ET with a highly anticipated performance by St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Orchestra. The broadcast series - hosted by WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon and APM's Fred Child - will continue through May 2012, with a range of luminaries, such as pianist Lang Lang in recital and the Berliner Philharmoniker to the outstanding early music ensemble L'Arpeggiata. Ten concerts will beam from Carnegie Hall's main Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, while the venue's Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall will each play host to more intimate performances. Opened in 1891, the venerable Carnegie Hall celebrates its 120th anniversary throughout its 2011-2012 season.
The series is sponsored, in part, by Macy's, and distributed to public radio stations by APM.
Distinct in its size, scope, and reach, CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will bring a modern-day spin to the live radio broadcast with innovative and robust digital features that will build community and conversation around the music. During every live broadcast, WQXR, APM and digital partner NPR Music will host live chats, moderated by guest hosts on www.WQXR.org and www.carnegiehall.org. Through NPR Music's live event application and Twitter hashtag #CHLive, the online audience will be able to chat with each other and the hosts. The site will offer an exciting array of photographs and related video content, and audiences will able to submit questions to be answered during the intermission features created as part of select broadcasts.
Tied to the broadcast series, both www.wqxr.org/carnegiehalllive and www.classicalapm.org will stream live and on-demand audio; special videos of performers in WQXR's "Cafe Concerts"; "Top 5 at 105" videos featuring conductors talking about their favorite pieces and recordings; Carnegie Hall-produced video profiles; and photo galleries from each performance.
"This groundbreaking series will build on WQXR's capacity to create digital community and innovation around classical music," said Graham Parker, WQXR Vice President. "We are delighted to partner with American Public Media and Carnegie Hall to make this remarkable 120th anniversary celebration available to audiences in New York and around the world."
"Through CARNEGIE HALL LIVE, we're thrilled to be able to extend the Carnegie Hall concert experience beyond our walls to audiences worldwide," said Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall's Executive and Artistic Director. "We're excited to partner with WQXR and APM on this wonderful new series, designed to bring listeners together, deepening their connections to great music."
"Carnegie Hall is our nation's most famous venue," said Brian Newhouse, Classical Managing Director, APM. "We're thrilled to be able to bring the very best classical performances as they happen to our audiences across the nation."
All concerts will air live on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and stream live at www.wqxr.org. The concerts will also broadcast live in more than 35 markets across the nation, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, and Austin, among others.
