May 3, 2012

VocalEssence, Minnesota Boychoir and One Voice Mixed Chorus to perform at this free outdoor concert

WHAT: Classical MPR is launching its first-ever annual choral festival--Harmony in the Park™--this summer at the Minnehaha Falls Park Bandshell on June 7 at 7 p.m.

Filling the early summer evening with song will be some of the region's finest choral ensembles--VocalEssence, Minnesota Boychoir and One Voice Mixed Chorus. With so many voices lifted up in song--at one of the Twin Cities most beloved park destinations--this will be a perfect gathering for nature enthusiasts, families and choral music lovers. The concert is part of the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board's Music and Movies series.

Harmony in the Park™ is part of Classical MPR's ongoing choral activities over the next 18 months. Choral music is a treasured part of Minnesota communities. Classical MPR has expanded its support of choral music with several projects, seeking to create innovation and collaboration while making inroads to new communities, new audiences and new forms of the genre.

Harmony in the Park™ is made possible in part by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Classical MPR is heard on stations statewide, including KSJN 99.5 FM in the Twin Cities and online at classicalmpr.org.

About the Choral Ensembles
Classical MPR is proud to present three Twin Cities choral ensembles of local and national renown.

Minnesota Boychoir:
Minnesota Boychoir is celebrating its 50th season of training boys and young men of all backgrounds in the highest standards of choral singing. Two of Minnesota Boychoir's three main ensembles are performing in this concert: Cantabile, ages 9-14; and Allegro, 14-18-year-old graduates of the boychoir program who now sing tenor and bass. Minnesota Boychoir's Artistic Director is Mark Johnson; Todd Price is the accompanist.

One Voice Mixed Chorus
One Voice Mixed Chorus is now the largest GLBTA (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and straight Allies) chorus in North America. One Voice Mixed Chorus formed in 1988 with the common goal of creating social change through music. Artistic Director Jane Ramseyer Miller conducts; Scott Lykins is the accompanist.

VocalEssence
Vocal Essence, founded in 1969 as the Plymouth Music Series, is deeply committed to innovative and culturally diverse programming and to community engagement. Its mission to explore music for the human voice, from the spoken word to choral singing, has resulted in commissions for new works, fourteen commercially released recordings, and community programs that impact thousands of students, singers, and composers each year. Guest conductor Eugene Rogers will lead this performance; Charles Kemper is the accompanist.
