Low to Headline The Current Sessions at The Fitz

Jan 9, 2013

89.3 The Current presents an evening with Low at the Fitzgerald Theater on Saturday, March 23, at 8:00p.m. This not-to-be missed event will celebrate the 20 year history of the band and the release of their new album, The Invisible Way, produced by Jeff Tweedy. The show will feature a retrospective of the band's greatest hits as well as tunes from the new album. Members of Duluth's breakout indie band Trampled by Turtles will join Low on stage for a few songs. In addition, 89.3 The Current host Mark Wheat will interview the performers. The show will be recorded for later broadcast as part of our The Current Sessions at the Fitz series, which launched last fall with a performance by Conor Oberst and was named "Best New Music Series" by Minnesota Monthly magazine in November.

Low has made ten studio albums and their music is known for its slow, quiet, sometimes melancholy and usually pretty quality. Their latest, The Invisible Way, will be released by Sub-Pop Records on March 19th. The Invisible Way has a slightly different feel from Low's previous recordings with lots of piano and acoustic guitar and with drummer, Mimi Parker, singing lead on five of the 11 songs. The songs are described as being about intimacy, the drug war, the class war and plain old war, archaeology and love.

TICKETS: Tickets go on sale to MPR members on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at noon and to the general public on Friday, Jan. 11 at noon. Tickets (general admission) are $27.50 and can be purchased by calling the MPR box office at 651-290-1221 during business hours (noon - 5 p.m., Tuesday to Friday).

WHEN: Friday, March 23, 8:00 p.m.

About the performers

Low was formed in Duluth in 1993 and Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker, and Steve Garrington have toured with Radiohead, Wilco, Nick Cave and Soul Coughing to name a few. Robert Plant has covered Low's "Monkey" and "Silver Rider" on his 2010 Band of Joy album and was later nominated for a Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance Grammy.

Trampled By Turtles celebrates 10 years as a band in 2013. Within the contained music scene of Duluth, the members of the band did their own time in punk and rock bands, brandishing their electricity proudly before switching to acoustic instruments. While they never set out to be a "bluegrass" band, Trampled by Turtles employs many of the same traditional techniques of the genre, but their differences in influences, attitude and attack make for their unique sound.

About The Current Sessions at the Fitz

The Current Sessions at the Fitz will offer a compelling opportunity for established, nationally known recording artists to visit St. Paul. Minnesota Public Radio's Fitzgerald Theater offers a unique performance setting in the city - more intimate than a stadium, larger than a club. Through creative and collaborative production with The Current and the Fitzgerald Theater, the artists will engage with existing fans and new listeners, and their performances will provide further enrichment to Minnesotans' artistic experiences. The Current Sessions at The Fitz is sponsored in part by the Saint Paul Cultural STAR Grant and the Legacy Amendment for Arts and Cultural Heritage.
