Jun 20, 2013

MPR News today announced that The Takeaway will replace NPR's Talk of the Nation during the Monday -Thursday 1 p.m. time slot, beginning Monday, July 1. NPR announced in late March that it was canceling Talk of the Nation, effective July 1. Listeners will continue to hear Science Friday on Fridays at 1 p.m.

Co-produced by WNYC and Public Radio International,The Takeaway is hosted by veteran journalist John Hockenberry. The show offers listeners a fresh take on the day's news and features a mix of national and international stories. Hockenberry, along with editorial partners The New York Times and WGBH Boston, invites listeners to participate in what the show calls "the American conversation" both on-air and online.

"MPR News' audiences will love The Takeaway. John Hockenberry is an accomplished journalist and a terrific interviewer," said Chris Worthington, managing director for MPR News. "Taken together--The Takeaway at 1 p.m., BBC Newshour at 2 p.m. and All Things Considered at 3 p.m.-- we're providing our audiences the very best in national and international news coverage and perspectives every weekday."

John Hockenberry is a three-time Peabody Award winner, four-time Emmy award winner and former Dateline NBC correspondent. He has broad experience as a journalist and commentator for more than two decades. He has reported from all over the world, in virtually every medium, having anchored programs for network, cable and radio. Hockenberry spent more than a decade with NPR as a general assignment reporter, Middle East correspondent and host of several programs. He returned to public radio in 2008 to host The Takeaway.
