Google has announced plans to build high-speed fiber-optic broadband networks in select communities across the U.S. later this year. The technology giant has invited communities to apply to be one of the first test locations for the project. In the test communities, Internet will run as fast as 1 gigabit per second. Currently most operate at less than 10 megabits per second. The deadline for applications is March 26, 2010.Minnesota Public Radio | American Public Media, in partnership with the National Center for Media Engagement, will host an online workshop to educate and assist the communities we serve with their applications.

A longtime foreign correspondent who covers Iraq for National Public Radio, Amos will speak March 24 in the auditorium of O'Shaughnessy Educational Center at the University of St. Thomas. The lecture is co-sponsored by St. Thomas' College of Arts and Sciences and the Communication and Journalism Department.

Minnesota Public Radio announced today that Jon Gordon will serve as its newsroom's first social media/mobile editor. Gordon is the creator and host of American Public Media's Future Tense, a weekday radio program that has been a news leader reporting on emerging technologies and trends. Gordon will start in his new position in early May. John Moe, the former host of American Public Media's Weekend America, will assume Gordon's role reporting on technology matters.
